Jecarlos, how long have you and your wife lived in the Heights?
My wife and I moved into the neighborhood in 1998. We have seen many changes since then; some great, some good, some bad. Its getting back to great though and that makes us very excited. We love this neighborhood and we want to stay. This is home.
When did you first get involved in the community?
Our lives have been very busy so we weren’t able to be involved as much as we would have liked. We really started thinking about the community and knew that we wanted to help. We have been heavily involved in the Heights since 2010 and we haven’t looked back. We want this neighborhood to be wide-open; we want everyone to be involved. Some people are disagree with me on this but even the drug dealers. We want them involved as long as they do it right. We don’t want to exclude anyone. How are they going to learn a better way if we don’t teach them?
If you had unlimited resources, what would you do for the Heights?
A lot! I would provide jobs to residents. I would pay them to walk the streets, talk to neighbors, walk the kids to and from school and just keep an eye on things. If something needs reporting they could write it down and report it to the police of code enforcement. I would bring businesses to the neighborhood; businesses that we need. This would provide good local jobs. The biggest thing I would like to do is something for the kids. I would like to increase health and athletic awareness for boys and girls. It is my dream that every child in the Heights is fit, healthy and happy. You know, kids see everything and they are very honest. They walk the streets everyday going to and from school. Sometimes they know the neighborhood better than the adults. The kids need better alternatives. They need better recreational activities in their neighborhood that they can walk to. We can make this happen. We’re in it to win it!
